We at the Gregory J. Harris Military Courtesy Room would like to thank the American Legion Families of NY's District 5 for their recent donation of $1800 to cover the cost of our new kitchenette! After an unanimous vote of those present at their spring meeting in Sackets Harbor, a check was presented to Mary Ann Reitano, the MCR's Public Relations Coordinator. Since that meeting, the MCR has been updated with kitchen cabinets and a much needed sink. Both Volunteers and Troops are very appreciative of this donation from this fine group of patriots! It has made a world of difference in the day to day operations of the MCR. We welcome all members of the area's American Legions to come by the MCR to see what their donation has done for so many! A special thank you to Jayne for her efforts on our behalf! -The MCR Staff and Volunteers! |

As you may know, we recently began our new public relations program this week where we invite local celebrities to volunteer for a shift at the Courtesy Room. On Thursday, March 5th Danvers, MA native Brian McGuirk (Crunch Left Wing #33) and Ham Lake, MN native Trevor Frischmon (Crunch Center #39) were on hand as our very first guest volunteers. Although the Room wasn’t too busy during their visit they greeted those who were there and helped pack some boxes for our adopted platoon. A few members of the Crunch Front Office joined us as well which was just fabulous! They are really fun people and obviously enjoyed getting out of the office for a while. They learned more about the Courtesy Room and are hoping to get another opportunity to guest volunteer at the Room before the end of their season. Pictured above are Brian and Trevor with a few of our visitors from the 10th MTN DIV. The players stayed around longer than planned which was great of them and it was nice to have them around. They had the opportunity to chat with several of the soldiers and volunteers and even a few of our junior volunteers who are big Crunch fans! Brian and Trevor are part of the same offensive line for the Crunch and each had a great game the following night with Trevor scoring the game winning goal against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Trevor in particular is having what many sports reporters are referring to as a MVP year and Brian is as well. A special thank you to the players and staff for stopping by and meeting the Troops. We wish them the best of luck as the playoffs approach and we hope to see more of them in the near future! |

The Brave Soldiers of 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 2/87 Members of our Adopted Platoon Thanks to our partner in crime Carla at Ft. Drum, we have made arrangements to officially adopt a platoon from the 10th Mountain Division who is presently deployed in Afghanistan. We thought it would be nice for us to do something for a special group of Ft. Drum soldiers as they are our primary “guests” at the Room. Bravo company’s 1st Platoon 2nd Battalion 87th Infantry Regiment also known as ”The Fightin’ First” is now ours to spoil. This platoon deployed January 12th as part of the 3BCT and is presently working on improving relations with the locals in tenuous Wardak Province. The platoon does regular patrols outside the wire and is in a cold weather climate, just as we are. They are presently living in heated tents with 20 men per tent with limited electricity for now. We have been given a list of items that we will send on a regular basis and once we get specific requests we will add to the list. The list will be posted in the food storage room at the Courtesy Room and emailed to our volunteers. Please adhere to the list as these items are what have been specifically requested by the men. If you would like to donate money to be used toward purchases or go out and buy these item outright, feel free! An envelope for monetary donations for First Platoon 2/87 will be on the Staff Bulletin Board. If you’d like to send letters to the platoon, those are welcomed as well. Also, if you’d like a pen pal with one of these soldiers, simply write a letter, put it in the envelope and write “pen pal” on the envelope and we will send it on to them. Thanks for all you do for our Courtesy Room troops and now, for the 1st Platoon! |

Donation Scam - Not on our watch! |

You may have seen this Ch. 9 report on a telephone scam that we became aware of last week in which someone has been calling local residents asking for donations over the phone for the Gregory J. Harris Military Courtesy Room. Unfortunately, we became aware of it and reported it to the Syracuse Police Department. We also contacted Ch. 9’s Your Stories segment asking them to make the public aware of the scam AND contact Syracuse Police if they were called and still had information about the caller and what they asked potential donors to do with their donations. Apparently, Ch. 9 contacted the police and they didn’t want to add that residents who were contacted should call the Syracuse Police. We at the Courtesy Room are beside ourselves that someone out there would use our project to cheat people out of their hard earned money. If the Police don’t seem interested in finding this individual, we at the Courtesy Room are more than interested. If you have been contacted by this individual over the phone and have any information; a phone number from the caller ID, the address where they asked you to send the donations or anything of that nature, we ask that you contact us via email at

and we will take it from there. To reiterate what was said on the Ch. 9 broadcast, we only solicit donations via written letter and anyone wanting to send a donation should send it to: Gregory J. Harris Military Courtesy Room 7155 Manlius Center Road East Syracuse, NY 13057 Check should be made out to - Gregory Harris Military Courtesy Room If you have any questions, please call 315-715-0404 and speak with out Public Relations Coordinator. Thank you to the Community for your ongoing support of our project and we hope that the perpetrator of this illegal activity is found and brough to justice in the very near future. Thank you! A special thank you to our staffers, Tina & Doug Jenks and Wendy & Ariel Shoen for their long hours spent decorating the Courtesy Room this week. We have received volumes of compliments from travelers, airport staff and of course ... the Troops! They were in awe to think that someone felt they were worth all that time and effort ... Well, they certainly are! Merry Christmas! |
